What Is Emotional Intelligence?

What is emotional intelligence? Who is emotionally intelligent? What are emotions? There are many definitions that the different authors who study it give us. We are left with this definition.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, understand and manage one’s own emotions, those of others, and even those that suggest environments, situations, creations, etc.

Emotional Intelligence Capabilities

Identification: knowing how to capture and name one’s own emotions and moods, those of others and those of the environment. All this from its physiological signals, its non-verbal messages, and subtle sensations.

  • Use: knowing how to establish correspondence between emotions and situations. Know how to spontaneously generate in oneself and others the most appropriate emotions according to the situations.
  • Comprehension: knowing how to understand the causes of emotions, knowing how to explain the cause and emotion relationship, and, consequently, knowing how to foresee possible reactions to a certain emotion.
  • Management: knowing how to collect total emotional information (internal and external opening), integrate it with thought, and, consequently, handle it for decision-making and strategy planning. “
  • Learning to manage emotions is basic. It is the main objective of emotional education. Recognizing emotions is important. But so is knowing what to do with them. Look within and channel them in the

    right way. What can I do with the anger I feel? If the emotional intelligence of the person is developed, he will have no problem channeling each one of the emotions he feels at different times in his life.

Emotions are energy that must be channeled, especially negative ones. That is why we must allow ourselves to express how we feel in moments of conflict, joy, concern, … When we feel anger and do not channel it, it stays within us and we will possibly somatize it. It can be in the form of stomach pain, asthma problems, or we will discharge them against other people who have nothing to do with the cause of our anger. All these negative emotions: anger, aggressiveness, etc., must be channeled positively.

When a person can manage their own emotions is when we can say that they are an emotionally intelligent person.

And this emotional intelligence must be educated from the first years of the child’s life, both from the family and from school. And, fortunately, there are many ideal activities for the little ones that allow us to do it.
